What Are Your Obligations After an Accident?
After every accident, you are required to stop and exchange information with the driver. If necessary, you will have to speak directly to the police. If you hit an unattended vehicle, you must leave your insurance and contact information for the owner. Failing to do so is a crime.
The sooner you speak to me after your accident, the better your chances are of resolving the matter favorably.
• If you leave the scene of a property damage accident or fail to provide information at an accident scene, you are subjecting yourself to a 6-month license revocation.
• If you leave the scene of an accident resulting in personal injury to another person, you are facing fines in the amount of $1,000.00 - $3,000.00 and/or a prison term of not less than 1 year nor more than 2 years. Your license will also be revoked for 1 year.
If you leave the scene of an accident resulting in death to another person, you are guilty of a Class E felony subjecting you to a prison term of up to 5 years with a term of incarceration of not less than 1 year and a minimum mandatory prison term of 6 months. Your license will also be revoked for 2 years.
